Tigers Drop Pitcher’s Duel on Opening Day

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball program battled in a pitcher's duel on Opening Day of the 2026 campaign, ultimately falling in a 3-2 decision in 11 innings against Utah Valley on Friday evening from Klein Family Field.

The Tigers (0-1) received a pair of dazzling debuts on the mound from redshirt junior Garret Plata and redshirt junior Zach Todd, but the Wolverines' (1-0) late offensive push gave the visitors the opening day result.

The Pacific pitching staff combined for 24 strikeouts through the 11-inning contest, setting the most team strikeouts in a single game by the Tigers since rejoining the West Coast Conference in 2013.

Taking the ball as the first starter of the season, Plata pitched a one-hit, ten-strikeout performance in the first four innings of Friday's action. The ten strikeouts marked the most by a Pacific starter since Ricky Reynoso struck out ten Cal Baptist hitters in a game during the 2019 season.

On the offensive side of things, the Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. Just like he did to start the 2025 campaign, sophomore Diego Davis knocked in the Tigers' first run of the season with a two-out single to give Pacific a 1-0 edge.

UVU would tie the game in the ninth inning and take the lead in the 11th inning, thanks to a pair of home runs from Hunter Katschke.

Graduate student Brendan O'Sullivan sent a charge to left field for the first Pacific home run of the season, bringing the Tigers within a run in the home half of the 11th frame. Pacific was able to continue rallying with a pair of walks, but the completion of a comeback bid fell just short in the 3-2 loss.

The Tigers return for a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch times slated for noon and 3 p.m., while the series finale against the Wolverines will be Sunday at 11:30 a.m. from Klein Family Field.
