No. 22 Pacific Preps for Busy Weekend at Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing four games in three days, the No. 22 Pacific women's water polo program heads to the Sullivan Aquatic Center to face No. 20 Brown, No. 25 CSU Northridge, CSU Monterey Bay and Pomona-Pitzer, hosted by Santa Clara.
 
The action begins Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game against Brown (5-2). Pacific (3-3) returns Saturday for a 12:15 p.m. game against CSU Northridge (7-1) and a 4 p.m. contest against CSU Monterey Bay (5-5). The weekend concludes with a 12:30 p.m. Sunday affair against Pomona-Pitzer (2-5).
 
The Tigers are coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Arizona State Tournament. It fell to No. 6 Arizona State and No. 18 Marist before bouncing back to beat UC Santa Barbara and Cal Lutheran.
 
Freshman Maria Ikonomou registered 11 goals and two assists over the four games including a career-high five goals on seven shots against Marist. She leads the team with 17 goals on the campaign.
 
Three of Pacific's top-four leading scorers are freshmen. Junior Laia Marsinach Ortega has netted 10 goals, while freshmen Sophie Pethers and Eleni Ikonomou have registered nine and eight goals, respectively.
 
The Tigers have used a trio of goalkeepers thus far including junior Maja Lizy Dulic and sophomores Laural Cooper and Lillian Ecklund. Cooper has seen the bulk of the duties and has tallied 29 saves and 14 steals in five appearances.
 
Pacific and Brown are tied 4-4 in the all-time series. Brown was off last weekend but played three games at the Princeton Invitational the week prior, beating Mount St. Mary's 15-5 and Siena 19-5 but falling to Marist 13-10.
 
CSU Northridge began the season unranked but leaped into the polls with its 7-1 start. The team's only loss was a 17-14 decision to No. 23 Cal Baptist.
 
CSU Monterey Bay has a 12-7 win on its resume over Santa Clara. Pacific is 13-5 all-time against CSU Monterey Bay and has won six consecutive meetings dating back to 2011.
 
The Tigers are a perfect 7-0 all-time against Pomona but the two teams have not met since 2017. Pomona is the reigning Division III national champion after going 25-10 overall last year with a perfect 12-0 record in the SCIAC.
 
Pacific's next home game is Saturday, March 7 at 5 p.m. against UC Davis.
