SAN FRANCISCO - The Pacific men's soccer program battled through 90 minutes of West Coast Conference action Wednesday evening, but a pair of first-half goals lifted San Francisco to a 2-0 victory over the Tigers at Negoesco Stadium.
The Tigers (3-9-3, 2-2-1 WCC) generated 11 shots, including five on target, but were unable to break through against the Dons (5-5-4, 1-1-3 WCC), who capitalized on two opportunities in the opening half to secure the conference victory.
San Francisco struck first in the 26th minute when Matthew Duggan converted to give the Dons a 1-0 advantage.
Despite Pacific's offensive pressure, Oscar Harris doubled the Dons' advantage in the 41st minute, sending the hosts into halftime with a two-goal lead.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Alejandro Caracheo Luna delivered five saves across 90 minutes, including three in the second half, helping the Tigers keep the match within reach.
Moreno paced Pacific offensively with three shots, while Yangyuoru contributed two attempts. Andrew,
Montgomery Carey and
Joseph Odipo each recorded a shot on goal as the Tigers continued searching for an offensive breakthrough.
Pacific finished with three corner kicks while matching San Francisco's five shots on goal, demonstrating its ability to generate opportunities despite the final result.
Although the setback marked Pacific's second consecutive conference defeat, the Tigers remain in contention for a postseason berth with three regular season matches remaining.
Pacific will look to rediscover the offensive efficiency that helped produce consecutive conference victories over Santa Clara and Saint Mary's earlier this month.
The Tigers return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. PT when they travel to Denver for another pivotal WCC matchup. With valuable conference points still available, Pacific has an opportunity to regain momentum and continue its pursuit of a berth in the inaugural WCC Men's Soccer Tournament.
