Tigers Falter in Third Quarter Loss to Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Pacific put up four quarters of tough play but a five-minute stretch in the third quarter presented an insurmountable deficit in the 53-74 loss to Portland on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center.

Coming out of halftime the Tigers (7-8, 2-2 WCC) trailed by one but an 11-0 run in the first five minutes of quarter number three from the Pilots (9-7, 3-1 WCC) put the game out of reach. Pacific connected on a pair of three-pointers in the waning minutes of the third, but Portland responded with a three of its own to run its lead to 13 going into the fourth quarter and did not relent.

Senior Sydney Ward rebounded from her last game and put up a team high 13-points (3-9 FG, 1-2 3pt, 6-7 FT) along with seven rebounds and two assists. She also tallied a block during the game, which moved her into a tie with Gillian d'Hondt for 7th on the all-time blocks list. Her next block will tie her for sixth all-time with Lainie Bebber.

Her efforts underscored an area the Tigers excelled in this afternoon, and that was the boards. Pacific held a slight 46-45 advantage on the glass and, led by sophomore Winner Bartholomew's team leading eight rebounds, saw four Tigers grab seven or more boards. Joining Ward and Bartholomew was junior Marina Radocaj and redshirt sophomore Stella Szabo who each went for seven rebounds.

Radocaj continued to thrive within the Chiles Center also putting up nine points (4-6 FG, 1-2 FT), a block and a steal. In two games at the Chiles Center in her career she averages nine points a game.

Pacific returns home next week for just a single game, taking on Saint Mary's on Thursday at 6 p.m. The last time these two schools met was at the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas where the Tigers eliminated the Gaels 74-59.

Thursday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
