SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Looking to hand Santa Clara its first home loss of the season, the Pacific men's basketball program heads to the Leavey Center for a 7 p.m. tip Wednesday.
Pacific (12-7, 3-3 WCC) is going up against a Santa Clara (14-5, 5-1 WCC) that's 9-0 at home this year. The Broncos are coming off a 103-72 home win over LMU and their only conference loss as an 89-77 road decision at No. 8 Gonzaga.
The Tigers are also coming off a home win as they came back to beat San Diego 77-70 on Saturday. Pacific trailed by 10 at the intermission, 17 with 17:13 remaining and 13 with 9:06 left before roaring back.
Seniors
TJ Wainwright and
Justin Rochelin tallied their first career double-doubles. Wainwright drained five three-pointers and notched a season-high 25 points with 10 rebounds, while Rochelin registered 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Pacific is going for its first WCC road win of the year. The Tigers have road wins at Cal State Fullerton 85-73 and Air Force 80-65.
Four different Tigers have recorded a double-double in a game this year including Wainwright, Rochelin and seniors
Elias Ralph and
Isaac Jack.
Ralph, a WCC Preseason All-Conference Team selection, leads the team in both scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). He has five double-doubles on the year and 15 in two seasons at Pacific. Ralph ranks top-five in the WCC in scoring, minutes and free throw percentage. In conference games, Ralph is averaging 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Wainwright averages in double-figures with 13.7 points per game. He's hit a three-pointer in 18 of 19 games this season and is shooting .447 from long range in conference. Wainwright is coming off a season-high 25 points against the Toreros where he drilled five threes.
Senior
Jaden Clayton ranks 28th in the country in assists with 5.9 per outing. He's averaging 7.2 assists per game in conference.
In conference games, Rochelin is averaging 12.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He's coming off his first career double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds against San Diego.
The Broncos are off to a strong start after a stellar non-conference slate which included victories over Xavier, Nevada and Minnesota. They rank 14th in the country in offensive rebounding with 14.3 per game.
Sophomore Christian Hammond, a 6-4 guard who redshirted at SCU last year, leads the team with 16.3 points per game. Senior Elijah Mahi also averages in double-figures with 14.7 points per outing after putting in 11.1 points per game last year at SCU.
Pacific will conclude the week with a 3 p.m. game Saturday at Oregon State. The Tigers won the first meeting between the two squads this year 84-53 at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Jan. 2.
NOTES
- Wednesday will be the 141st meeting against Santa Clara and the Tigers are going for their first win in the series since a 95-89 road victory on Jan. 28, 2023.
- In the current NCAA NET Rankings, Pacific is No. 120 out of 365, while the Broncos are No. 51. The WCC has five teams in the top 120 with Gonzaga atop at No. 6.
- Pacific has already surpassed its overall win total by three games from last season when it finished 9-24. It's the second year in a row under head coach
Dave Smart that the Tigers have increased their win total as he inherited a 6-26 (0-16 WCC) squad from 2023-24.
- Pacific has outrebounded all six conference opponents this season. The Tigers rank 15th in the nation in rebounding margin at a +9.8 clip.
- Pacific ranks 21st in the country in free throw percentage with a .776 mark.
- The Tigers are 8-0 this year when shooting over .500 from the field and 8-0 when they have more fast break points. Pacific is 9-0 under
Dave Smart in two seasons when holding the opposition to under 60 points and 6-0 this year.
- Pacific has only used two starting lineups this season. Clayton and junior
Kajus Kublickas have flipped back-and-forth at the point guard position.
