Toreros Take Shortened Series Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In the final series opener of the regular season, the Pacific baseball program fell in a 13-1 decision in seven innings to San Diego on Thursday night at Fowler Park.

The Tigers (20-34, 8-14 WCC) could not generate enough offensively against the Toreros (23-28, 17-5 WCC), who with the game one win, clinched the No. 1 overall seed for the West Coast Conference Tournament. Despite today's series-opening loss for Pacific, with Thursday's loss for Santa Clara and Pepperdine, the Tigers need to secure a win tomorrow night or in the series finale Saturday to clinch the sixth and final spot into the WCC Tournament.

The lone Tiger to record a hit was graduate student Kordell Brown, who went 1-for-2 on the night from the nine spot in the lineup. Junior Jake Tandy brought home the Tigers' run with a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh for his 26th RBI of the year.

Redshirt senior Josh Souza made his sixth start of the season on the mound and his third in WCC play. Five pitchers followed in relief of Souza's start in the seven-inning contest.

The Toreros struck early and often tonight en route to clinching the top spot for the WCC Tournament, scoring four in the first and three in the second frame to ultimately go on to win by the 12-run margin.

The Tigers will look to rest and regroup for Friday, seeking a bounce-back performance for game two of the series in San Diego. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. PDT.
