STOCKTON, Calif. – After jumping out to a six-run lead, the Pacific softball team endured a three-run seventh inning from Saint Mary's and took the series finale 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field.
Freshman
Presley Barnes got her team out in front early with her second homerun of the season. Barnes was a major presence for the Tigers (12-22, 1-2 WCC) throughout the series, knocking three hits in seven appearances and driving in two runs.
Pacific then capitalized on two Saint Mary's (19-17, 2-1 WCC) missteps in the third inning by scoring a runner of a wild pitch and another off a passed ball. Senior
Emma Dazell then contributed with a productive groundout for the third run of the third inning.
Finally in the sixth, the top of the Tiger lineup gave Pacific two runs that proved crucial for the win. Junior
Olivia Silvestre drew a walk to bring in the fifth run of the game before freshman
Jayleen Scott singled up the middle to bring in run number six.
Silvestre, known for her hitting prowess out of the leadoff spot, with two walks today has 19 on the season – leading the team and contributes to a .561 on-base percentage, which is good for second in the conference and 22nd in the nation. She also ranks second in the conference and 61st in the nation in total hits.
In the circle meanwhile, sophomore
Justice Alcaraz earned her eighth win of the season, shutting down the Saint Mary's offense for six innings and then stranding the bases loaded for the Gaels in the seventh to clinch the win. She gave up three runs on 11 hits and walked two batters.
The complete game is her longest outing since Mar. 2 against San Jose State to close out the Libby Matson Tournament.
Up next for the team is a trip to Berkeley, Calif. to face California on Wednesday before the first conference road test at Santa Clara on Saturday and Sunday.
