LOS ANGELES – Down by seven runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Pacific baseball program rattled off ten runs to take the rubber match over LMU by a 14-11 margin on Sunday afternoon at Page Stadium.
The Tigers (13-20, 2-7 WCC) completed their largest ninth-inning comeback since rejoining the West Coast Conference in 2013, downing the Lions (16-15, 4-5 WCC) with the ten-run frame to earn their first conference series victory of the season and first one under head coach
Reed Peters.
"We came in shorthanded and the guys that were in the lineup fought tooth and nail to prove something," Peters said. "I'm extremely proud of the team! Hopefully it sends a message to them going forward."
Senior
Drake Bicknell secured what would be the game-winning two-RBI double in the ninth inning after the Tigers rallied from down seven to take a commanding 14-11 lead. Bicknell went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs from the fifth spot in the order.
Five more Tigers recorded multi-hit performances, including key contributions from junior
Jake Tandy (3-for-4) and freshman
Diego Davis (2-for-3) during the ninth-inning rally. Redshirt sophomore
Park Romney also collected his first multi-hit game as a Tiger.
On the pitching side, senior
Jakob Guardado began for Pacific, which was his seventh start of the season. In relief, senior
Ethan Shaver pitched 3.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run with a couple strikeouts. Junior
Jarryd Wood (1-2) closed the door for his first win of the season.
The Lions got contributions from all around their lineup, including notably a four-RBI day at the plate from their three-hole hitter.
LMU scored early and often in jumping out to a 9-1 lead after two frames. Pacific chipped away at the Lions' lead to an 11-4 edge in favor of the home team entering the ninth.
In dramatic fashion, the Tigers sent 15 hitters up to plate and drove home a season-high ten runs on six hits in one inning, including the eventual game-winning hit by Bicknell with his towering double to left field to make the score 13-11. Davis added the insurance tally with an RBI single to cap off the ten-run inning.
Sunday's ninth inning marked the most runs scored by Pacific in an inning since 2019 against UC Davis when the team dropped an 11-run inning in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the frame, Wood completed his relief outing with a 1-2-3 inning to slam the door shut on a series victory. The Tigers' 14 runs tie a season-high in the category, as well as 16 hits surpasses the previous season best.
Pacific now has two more wins than last year's squad as the team completed its first WCC series win since April 2023. The series victory also marks Pacific's first road series victory at LMU in program history.
The Tigers have a quick turnaround as they continue their road trip to face California tomorrow in the Bay Area at Stu Gordon Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. PDT. Pacific will return to Klein Family Field following its seven-game road trip on April 15 against Cal State Bakersfield.
