No. 21 Women’s Water Polo Finishes Season with Win

LOS ANGELES – The 2025 season concluded on a high note for the No. 21 Pacific women's water polo program as it defeated No. 22 San Diego State in the Golden Coast Conference third-place game 16-9 Sunday at the Burns Aquatics Center on the campus of LMU.

It was a revenge match from last season as third-seeded Pacific (14-10, 5-2 GCC) and fourth-seeded SDSU (15-15, 4-3 GCC) met in the same game last year but the Aztecs finished on top 12-8. The Tigers completed the season sweep this year over SDSU after winning 14-12 in the regular season match-up on April 4.

Leading the offense for the Tigers were junior Dora Alaksza and sophomore Alicia Petkov with four goals apiece. Alaksza, an All-Conference First-Team selection, finished the year with 95 goals, the second-most in the program's single-season history behind a mark of 102 by Sarah Harris in 2007.

Alaksza, who has a year of eligibility remaining, is up to 243 career goals and ranks third all-time in Pacific history in scoring. She's chasing Molly Smith's program-leading tally of 286 goals from 1997-00 and Jessica Schroeder who is second with 268 goals from 2001-05.

In her final career game, senior Addison McGowan, an All-Conference Honorable Mention, notched two goals and three assists. Sophomore Ella Cowan also found the back of the net twice.

Senior Hila Futorian, an All-Conference Second-Team selection, played in her final career game as she tallied a goal and three assists. She ended her four-year career with 185 goals which is ninth all-time in program history.

Getting on the stat sheet with a goal apiece were seniors Ilyana Zlobinsky and Natalie Johnston in their final career games, as well as sophomores Millie Jacobson and Lily Van Putten.

In net, sophomore Maja Lizy Dulic, an All-Conference Honorable Mention, blocked nine saves. Freshman Laurel Cooper entered in relief and made four saves without conceding a goal.

SDSU scored the first goal of the game, but Pacific answered with five straight to lead 5-1 at the 2:51 mark of the first quarter after a score by McGowan. The Tigers extended it to 10-4 late in the second quarter on a goal by Zlobinsky. Pacific led 11-5 at the half after a score by Petkov.

Pacific's lead was never threatened in the second half as a goal by Johnston put the team ahead 15-9 late in the third quarter. The only goal scored in the fourth was by Alaksza with 3:53 remaining.

Head coach James Graham wrapped up his 11th season leading the women's program and carries a 181-135 record.
