Offensive Explosion in Game Two Earns Softball Split Against San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Behind two hits and four RBIs from junior Allie Capello, Pacific erased an early six-run deficit in game two to take the game 10-8, avenging a 3-2 game one loss against San Diego at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex on Saturday evening.

GAME 1
Senior Desiree Smith started in the circle for the Tigers (15-30, 4-7 WCC) and, despite taking the loss, spun her most effective game of the season – throwing a complete game allowing only two earned runs (three runs total). The senior right-hander also matched her career-high five strikeouts (last done in 2024 at Saint Mary's).

The Pacific offense was afforded several chances to find the third and fourth runs for their pitcher, getting runners on base in six of the seven innings – including having runners on first and second in the seventh inning.

Senior Delaney Scully headlined Pacific's attack, launching her second homer of the season over the centerfield wall to lead off the fourth inning. She went on to be a major contributor in game two where she worked two walks, got a base hit, scored a run, and notched an RBI via a sacrifice fly. Her two RBIs across both games give her now 25 on the season and the team lead in the category.

The other run of the first game came off the bat of junior Olivia Silvestre in the seventh inning – she now ranks third on the team in runs batted in with 23 and leads the team in hits at 59 – just seven away from cracking the program's single-season top ten.

GAME 2
A mere half inning after San Diego (20-25, 4-7 WCC) scored eight runs to take an 8-2 lead, Pacific responded in the top of the third with six runs to draw even.

The rally started with the first four Tigers reaching base with the latter two producing RBIs. Senior Nina Davis cranked an RBI down the left field line before freshman Jayleen Scott put a single into left field to reduce the deficit to 8-4.

A hit by pitch and three batters later and Allie Capello stood at the plate as the potential game-tying run, and promptly tied the game with a grand slam to left field. Capello's grand slam is the first of the season for the Tigers and made her the third Tiger in a game this season with four RBIs (seniors Emma Dazell and Emily Budelli are the other two).

With this momentum, senior Hannah Glad, who had entered in the second inning and escaped unscathed, worked five more scoreless innings to pick up the win. Glad flexed a final line of 5.2 innings pitched, four hits allowed and four strikeouts – and only one batter advanced to second base or better once she entered the game. Her appearance this evening set a new season-high, and the third time in her career she has gone 5.2 innings or more and matches her career high in strikeouts (last done earlier this season against Idaho State).

In the sixth inning, a San Diego passed ball presented junior Asia Lee with the necessary opportunity to take the lead and converted the chance to take a 9-8 lead.

Another Torero error in the seventh set the stage for Junior Amanda Bricker to bring home Capello via a sacrifice fly and pad the Tiger lead to two. The first hitter of the San Diego half of the seventh reached on a single but a subsequent double play erased any chance at a USD rally.

Turning the double play has been a staple of the Tiger defense this season, ranking 27th in country in double played turned this season at 21 and trails only Santa Clara for the most in the WCC.
