LOS ANGELES – Postseason play begins Friday for the No. 21 Pacific women's water polo program when it kicks-off the Golden Coast Conference Tournament at 10 a.m. against Azusa Pacific at the Burns Aquatics Center on the campus of LMU.
Pacific (12-9, 5-2 GCC) earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, while APU (16-14, 2-5 GCC) is seeded No. 6. Friday will be a quarterfinal match-up in an eight-team bracketed tournament.
The Tigers won three of their last four matches to close out the regular season, which included a 13-12 win over APU. Junior
Dora Alaksza registered five goals to lead the attack in that victory.
Alaksza was one of four Tigers to earn All-Conference honors earlier in the week. She was named to the First-Team, while senior
Hila Futorian was named to the Second-Team and senior
Addison McGowan and sophomore
Maja Lizy Dulic garnered Honorable Mention.
Alaksza ranks No. 3 all-time in program history with 232 goals. She's chasing Molly Smith's program-leading tally of 286 goals from 1997-00 and Jessica Schroeder who is second with 268 goals from 2001-05.
APU is led by Jessie Nelson who was named the GCC Newcomer of the Year. She led the team with 66 goals but was held scoreless in the first meeting against Pacific.
The Tigers are 16-1 all-time against the Cougars and 5-0 at a neutral site. Pacific will look to knock APU out of the conference tournament for the third year in a row.
The winner of Friday's game will advance to the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday. The championship match is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday and the winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
