SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After finishing the season as the fourth seed in the upcoming West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Tournament, Pacific will face fifth-seeded LMU in the opening round Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Tigers (14-8, 5-2 WCC) bested the Lions (7-13, 2-5 WCC) in dramatic fashion in the regular season, rallying from a 3-2 deficit to pull out the 4-3 victory. Freshman
Nico Rating was the hero of the match, winning a third set tiebreaker to clinch the match in the Tigers' favor. However, setting Rating up for the heroic moment was sophomore
Christof Schaertlin Coffey's three-set triumph on court six that saw him comeback from one set down to take the match.
Pacific will be led by its five All-Conference selections, including First-Teamer junior
Tiago Silva on singles court one and Second-Teamer senior
Justas Trainauskas on singles court two. Silva posted an 11-6 record on court one this season and a 5-1 record in conference play.
Trainauskas was 7-4 on court two and 4-1 in WCC play.
All three doubles teams come into the match as members of the all-conference team. Schaertlin Coffey and his partner graduate
Ran Amar were selected to the second team while Trainauskas/freshman
Jonty Giesen and Silva/freshman
Vraj Patel were both named honorable mention.
In addition to his doubles prowess, Schaertlin Coffey will be a singles player to watch as he has a 7-2 record on court six and finished second on the team with ten singles wins this season.
