Softball Unable to Convert Late Opportunities Against Sacramento State

STOCKTON, Calif. – Down one run in the sixth inning, the Pacific softball team got runners to second and third with two outs but could not push either across in a 5-3 loss to Sacramento State Wednesday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field.

Early on, the Pacific (13-27) offense was up to the task of answering Sacramento State (21-18) – matching the Hornets' two runs in the first inning. It began with back-to-back extra-base hits from junior Amanda Bricker and freshman Presley Barnes. The former tripled down the right field line as the second batter of the game before the latter doubled her home to right center.

Barnes' double was the first of three two-baggers for the Tigers on the afternoon, giving the team 57 on the season – one of which would be hit by Bricker who ended the afternoon 2-for-4 with the two extra-base hits.

Two batters later Barnes was scored off the bat of senior Delaney Scully and her single up the middle. The RBI pulled her into a three-way tie for the team lead with senior Emma Dazell and junior Olivia Silvestre at 22 RBIs – the latter of whom also notched her 22nd RBI during the game.

However, Silvestre did so in loud fashion, launching her sixth homer of the season over the right field wall in the fifth inning. The big fly brought her into a tie with Bricker for the team lead at six home runs each. Should Silvestre and Bricker each hit two home runs they'd be the first pair of teammates to each hit eight or more homers in the same season in program history.

In that pivotal sixth inning, Delaney Scully doubled down the third base line with one out before getting replaced by junior Rory Schuck on the base paths. A passed ball moved Schuck up to third base. A strikeout, walk and steal later and freshman Peyton Clifford had two runners in scoring position with two outs.

The freshman was unfortunately unable to plate either runner and never threatened in the seventh.

Pacific has three games remaining in the homestand, hosting LMU for a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon and wraps up the series on Saturday with a single game at noon.
