STOCKTON, Calif. – Opportunistic defense kept the Pacific softball team in the contest early but No. 17 Stanford proceeded to hit five homeruns to break the contest open in the Cardinal's favor, ultimately downing Pacific 11-2 in five innings at Bill Simoni Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Pacific (13-26) turned double plays to escape each of the first two innings to limit Stanford's (30-8) damage to just two runs. The Tigers have been particularly adept at turning double plays this season – ranking second in the conference at 21, just three behind Saint Mary's.
And with 11 games remaining in the regular season, the 2025 softball Tigers are four double plays away from tying for the third most turned in program history and only eight away from tying for the program single season high.
Following that second inning, Stanford hit four homeruns to run its lead to eight runs entering the bottom of the fourth. In that frame, the Pacific offense roared to life with two runs in flashy fashion.
The frame started with freshman
Presley Barnes doubling to right center where she was then promptly brought home by senior
Talissa Montez's first RBI of the season via an RBI double to right field.
Fellow senior
Emma Dazell scored Montez a few batters later with a single down the left field line for the team's second run of the inning. The double has been a crucial component of the Pacific attack this season – coming in second in the conference with 60 doubles this season and trails Santa Clara by one double for the most in the West Coast Conference.
Three runs in the fifth inning closed out the contest for Stanford and Pacific was unable to respond and extend the game.
Taking the loss for Pacific this afternoon was senior
Desiree Smith, she dropped to 1-6 on the season after lasting 3.1 innings and surrendering seven runs, six of which were earned. Freshman
Kiley Shea handled pitching the rest of the way, giving up four runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
The team remains at home Wednesday to complete a rescheduled match with Sacramento State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
