Softball Edges Out Santa Clara to Take Series Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the second game in a row, the Pacific softball team went to extra innings against Santa Clara, but this time pulled out the 5-4 victory in nine innings Sunday afternoon at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium.

Twice in regulation the Tigers (13-25, 2-4 WCC) had the lead, getting off to a strong start in inning number two when junior Olivia Silvestre doubled home two runners to tally the game's first runs. Batting out of the nine spot for the first time this season, Silvestre put up both her best hit and RBI totals for the month, going 3-for-4 at the plate with the two RBIs.

The Tigers then responded to Santa Clara's (25-15, 5-1 WCC) comeback bid by singling home a runner in the sixth courtesy of freshman Peyton Clifford. The infielder was a consistent performer over the course of the series, hitting 3-for-8 and notching and RBI in two of the three games.

Finally in the ninth it was freshman Presley Barnes who knocked home the decisive run on an RBI single through the left side. The freshman has gotten into a rhythm at the plate in the month of April, notching multi-hit games in consecutive games for the first time in her career and is batting a scorching .389 at the plate (7-for-18).

Freshman Alexa Lewis picked up her second win over the season, appearing in relief of fellow freshman Kiley Shea. The former threw 5.2 innings for Pacific and only surrendered two runs while striking out three and walking two. In her 14 appearances this season, she has only once given up more than three runs when pitching five or more innings.

Shea meanwhile put together one of her most effective outings of the season, opening the game up with 3.1 innings of two-run softball, pitching to contact with no strikeouts and only one walk issued.

During the upcoming week the team is home for five games with midweeks against Stanford on Tuesday and Sacramento State on Wednesday. Conference play continues Friday/Saturday with a three-game series against LMU. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
