FRESNO, Calif. – Softball jumped out to early leads in both games of its day one Bulldog Classic games against Fresno State but faltered in the fifth inning to ultimately fall to FS 5-2 and 8-5 Saturday evening at the Margie Wright Diamond.
GAME 1
Junior
Amanda Bricker and
Delaney Scully drove in Pacific's (9-10) two runs on back-to-back hits in the form of a single for Bricker and double for Scully. Following that breakthrough, the Tigers would only manage one hit over the next six frames and just two other runners via an error and hit by pitch.
That other hit belonged to junior
Olivia Silvestre who upped her hitting streak to five games (later six) and has only not recorded a hit in three of Pacific's twenty games this season. In those three hitless games, she still managed to reach via a walk in two of them. Of all of Pacific's qualified hitters, she leads the team in both batting average (.443) and on base percentage (.541).
Pacific's pitching effort was solid as starting pitcher sophomore
Justice Alcaraz gave up only one run in her two innings starting and only two of the four runs conceded by senior
Hannah Glad were earned over the other four innings.
With that loss, Glad moves to 0-2 on the season.
GAME 2
The Tigers again struck in the first inning, this time for three runs. Senior
Emma Dazell forced a Bulldog (10-10) error to score Bricker and then senior
Nina Davis plated two more with a single a few batters later.
Freshman
Alyssa Garcia tallied her first collegiate RBI in the third inning and later her first collegiate hit in the seventh on a double.
Fellow freshman
Peyton Clifford a batter later brought in Pacific's fifth run of the contest. As a team the Tigers hit much better, tallying 12 hits.
Freshman
Alexa Lewis took the loss however pitching for Pacific, as she gave up seven runs in 4.2 innings but got charged for one more when her replacement, senior
Desiree Smith, took the circle for a final line of 4.2 innings pitched, seven hits, eight runs allowed, six earned, five walks and two strikeouts.
Smith in relief gave up one hit and two walks over the final four outs to stem the tide.
