Softball Unable to Capitalize on Early Chances in Loss to UC Riverside

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific reached its first two batters of the game and garnered two more hits in the second inning but could not bring any around to score and suffered a 6-3 setback to UC Riverside to round out day two of the Libby Matson Tournament at Bill Simoni Field on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Olivia Silvestre carried over her torrid past couple of games with another double to lead off the bottom of the first – her third double of the tournament and second extra base hit in as many days. Batting in the lead off spot the entire season, she has managed to reach base at least once in 14 of Pacific's (7-8) 15 games so far.

Playing shortstop, freshman Peyton Clifford punctuated her day with a two-run homer over the left field wall to plate Pacific's first two runs of the game and cut into UCR's (9-11) lead. The homer was her first collegiate bomb and at 2-for-3 collected her second multi-hit game of the homestand and the third multi-RBI game of her young career.

Shortly after Clifford's homer in the fifth, senior Emma Dazell brought in the third run of the frame via a sacrifice fly. Since knocking in her first RBIs of the season back on Feb. 14, Dazell has only once gone two or more consecutive games without notching an RBI and thus far has added five RBIs to her season ledger this weekend alone to now sit at 14.

Sophomore Justice Alcaraz was unable to avoid taking the loss this time, spinning four innings of two-run ball as senior Desiree Smith surrendered two runs in the fifth to give UC Riverside the cushion necessary to survive Pacific's three-run fifth inning.

Despite her 4-2 record on the season, Alcaraz has suffered a tinge of bad luck as she is 1-2 on the season when she gives up two or fewer runs (3-0 when giving up three or more runs).

The Tigers close out the Libby Matson Tournament, and their short three-day home stand, with a doubleheader Sunday against San Jose State at 10 a.m. and UC Riverside at 2L30 p.m.

Both matches are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
