Men’s Basketball Pulls Out Late Win over San Diego

STOCKTON, Calif. – A go-ahead bucket by junior Lamar Washington with 12 seconds left, followed by a last-second stop defensively by the Pacific men's basketball program secured a 71-69 victory over San Diego on Thursday at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

A match-up that featured 13 ties and 15 lead changes came down to the wire as the game was tied 69-69 and Pacific (8-18, 3-9 WCC) had the ball with 38 seconds left. Washington was able to work his way into the paint and score the game-winner on a left-handed lay-up.

After a San Diego (4-21, 1-11 WCC) timeout, the Toreros put up an off-balanced, contested three-pointer in the waning moments which was off the mark and the buzzer sounded.

Washington led all scorers with a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. He's hit the game-winner in two of Pacific's three conference wins this year which included a buzzer beater in overtime to beat Washington State 95-94 on the road.

Washington was one of three Tigers to score in double-figures. Senior Petar Krivokapic registered 15 points, while junior Elijah Fisher tallied 14 points and a pair of steals.

Nine points apiece came from senior Elias Ralph and sophomore Jazz Gardner. Ralph also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

San Diego shot 6-of-11 from three-point range in the first half but was held to an 0-for-5 mark in the second. The Tigers shot .542 from the field in the second half and .500 from the floor in the game.

Pacific led 14-12 with 12:41 left in the first half after a three by Washington. Another three by Washington kept the Tigers ahead 21-19 at the 10:02 mark.

The Toreros answered with an 8-0 run to go up 27-21. San Diego's largest lead was 34-25 with 5:21 remaining but Pacific ended the half strong. The Tigers cut it to 39-37 at the intermission after a lay-up by Ralph on the final possession.

Pacific's first lead of the second half came with 13:14 left after a lay-in by Fisher made it 49-47. Another bucket by Fisher increased it to 57-53 with 9:15 to go.

San Diego did not go away and regained a 63-61 edge with 6:07 left. The Tigers answered with a three with junior Seth Jones and did not trail again in the final 4:53. The Toreros kept it close despite not making a field goal in the final seven minutes but cashed in at the free throw line.

Pacific will close out the week with another home game Saturday when it hosts Gonzaga at 5 p.m. at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The game will be a black out and fans are encouraged to wear black.
