STOCKTON, Calif. – Behind a quality start from redshirt junior
Logan Drummond and an inside-the-park home run for redshirt senior
JT Waldon, the Pacific baseball program secured a series-opening 7-1 victory over South Dakota State Friday at Klein Family Field.
The Tigers (3-2) broke open the game with a four-run third inning, highlighted by Waldon's three-run home run that ultimately kept the Jackrabbits (0-1) at bay for the rest of the night.
"Drummond pitched six quality innings, which is what you need in a four-game series," head coach
Reed Peters said. "Waldon was great tonight at the plate. Overall, a great team win."
In dramatic inside-the-park fashion, Waldon hit his first home run of his collegiate career, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk. The last Tiger to hit an inside-the-park home run was
Chase Graves against the Roadrunners during the 2021 season. Graduate student
Brian McClellin made his Tigers debut at third base, reaching safely four times with three walks, a single and a pair of runs.
Drummond (1-0) turned in his first quality start of the season, throwing six innings of one-run ball while striking out six batters en route for his first win as a Tiger. South Dakota State's Ty Madison (0-1) resulted in the loss, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing five runs.
Pacific pounced on South Dakota State early as Waldon knocked in the opening run on an RBI double for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Tigers cashed in with a four-run spot in the bottom of the third inning with Waldon roping a ball into the right-center wall and racing around all four bases to extend the home team's lead to 5-0.
Fifth year
John-Howard Bobo, who went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks at the plate and two stolen bases, added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth frame with his wheels on a wild pitch to present a 6-0 score.
The Jackrabbits strung together a run in the top of the sixth, but after graduate student
Kordell Brown brought home the Tigers' seventh run of the night, the Tigers would shut the door on a 7-1 victory in front of the Stockton faithful. Brown's run-scoring single marks four straight games recording an RBI for the switch hitter.
The Tigers look ahead to a day-night doubleheader with the first game starting at 3 p.m., followed by the second game at 6 p.m.
