DAVIS, Calif. – A five-run seventh inning gave a spark to the Pacific baseball program that ultimately fell short, 11-7, to UC Davis in the road opener Tuesday night at Dobbins Stadium.
Down by five entering the top of the seventh, the Tigers (2-2) leveled the game up at 7-7 before the Aggies (3-1) responded and added insurance runs to hold on to the decision.
Pacific collected key performances at the plate from graduate student
Kordell Brown, senior
DJ Scott and redshirt senior
JT Waldon. The trio combined for five hits, three runs and five RBIs on the night.
Following the start by junior
Jackson Lux, senior
Jarryd Wood pitched effectively in relief, throwing a scoreless 3.1 innings and striking out five batters. The five Aggie strikeouts were a career-high for Wood.
The Tigers opened the scoring with some two-out production in the top of the first. Following a single and stolen base by Scott, Waldon sent him in with a single for his first RBI as a Tiger for a 1-0 lead.
Trailing 7-2 into the top of the seventh, Pacific loaded the bases with no outs before Brown drove in a pair to cut the deficit to 7-4. Brown recorded his third straight game with at least one RBI and extended his RBI total to a team-high of six. A sacrifice fly by freshman
Diego Davis and RBI double by Scott made the score a one-run ball game, 7-6. With runners on the corners, junior
Jake Tandy knocked in Scott with a sacrifice fly to right field to knot the game up at 7-7.
UC Davis was able to respond in the bottom of the seventh, taking an 8-7 lead before tacking on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away with a final score of 11-7.
The Tigers return home to face South Dakota State in a four-game series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
