Two-Out Magic Sparks Tigers’ 6-3 Win Over Tritons

STOCKTON, Calif. – Six two-out runs propelled the Pacific baseball program to a 6-3 victory over UC San Diego Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field.

Behind sophomore Robert Orr's big day at the plate and in relief, the Tigers (2-1) earned their first series win of the season and first series win over the Tritons (1-2) in program history.

Orr manufactured a 2-for-3 performance with two runs and three RBIs, including his first home run of the season. Redshirt junior JT Waldon also collected a multi-hit performance with a double and run.

Senior Jakob Guardado made his first start of the season, going 5.0 innings with three earned runs before passing the torch to senior Ethan Shaver (1-0) for three scoreless innings. Orr moved from shortstop to the mound to close the game, striking out a batter en route to securing his first save of the season.

UC San Diego starter Nathan Ries went 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Jake Villar (0-1) was handed the loss after surrendering three runs in an inning pitched.

The Tigers attacked out of the gates as Orr crushed a two-run home run to left field in the top of the second inning to give his team a 2-0 lead.

The Tritons responded with back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth frame to take a 3-2 lead. Pacific was quick to respond as graduate student Kordell Brown laced a two-out RBI single, leveling the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers cashed in with two outs once again in the next frame, scoring three times to break out in front, 6-3. Following Orr's RBI single to shortstop to give Pacific a 4-3 lead, junior Jake Tandy tacked on the pair of insurance runs with a two-RBI single up the middle to cap the rally in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Shaver and the defense held their ground through the next two innings before Orr shut the door in the ninth to seal the 6-3 victory.

The Tigers won their first non-conference home series since March 2022 against Cal State Bakersfield. In that same year, the Tigers also opened the season with a home series sweep over Northern Colorado.

Pacific looks ahead to its first road contest of the season, taking on UC Davis on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium. The Tigers have won two of their last three road contests against the Aggies.
