STOCKTON, Calif. – A back-and-forth battle saw the Pacific baseball program take its first loss of the season in an 11-4 defeat to UC San Diego Saturday night at Klein Family Field.
The Tigers (1-1) trailed early and found opportunities to claw back, but the Tritons (1-1) ultimately added insurance runs to secure the decision.
Graduate student
Kordell Brown paced Pacific's bats in the lead-off spot, going 2-for-4 with his first collegiate multi-hit performance and home run in the effort offensively. Senior
DJ Scott stayed hot at the plate following Friday night's walk-off home run, adding two more hits (2-for-4) on his opening weekend display.
Redshirt junior
Nathen Nino (0-1) made his Tigers debut as the starting pitcher, going 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out five batters.
UC San Diego's starter Spencer Seid (1-0) earned the decision, going 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Anthony Potestio led the charge for the Tritons, knocking four hits and scoring three runs.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and added two more in the top of the third to hold a 4-0 lead. Pacific responded as freshman
Diego Davis delivered his second RBI of the season to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Following a run by the visitors in the top of the fifth, the Tigers struck back as Brown launched a two-run shot to make the score, 5-3.
UC San Diego was able to add insurance in the later stages of the contest, ultimately shutting the door on a 11-4 final score.
The Tigers will wrap up the season-opening series in the rubber match tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
