STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team contained Cal Baptist for three quarters but conceded 23 fourth quarter points and the Tigers dropped the 67-54 Saturday decision at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
The catalyst for Pacific's (1-1) success over the first three quarters started at the defensive end, forcing turnovers, and limiting the damage from the three-point line. The Tigers turned Cal Baptist (2-0) over 21 times in the first three frames and held CBU to a 21.7% (5-for-23) shooting clip from deep. Fortunes changed in the final quarter, as Cal Baptist shot 4-for-7 from three and only turned the ball over three times for a final line of 9-for-30 (30.0%) shooting from deep and 24 total turnovers.
The biggest culprit in turning over Cal Baptist was sophomore
Daria Nestorov, who put up a career-best four steals. Those bonus offensive possessions translated to a career-high afternoon facilitating the ball for Nestorov, dishing out seven assists and eclipsing her previous best of six. She finished the game with 12 points (4-for-19, 3-for-10 three-points) and four rebounds.
With the extra looks on the offensive half of the court, sophomore
Winner Bartholomew took full advantage. The sophomore put up a team, and career, high 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting and did it at all levels. Bartholomew hit her first three-point attempt of the season and shot a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line. She also added five rebounds, two steals and an assist to her stat line.
As a team, Pacific turned in another strong effort on the glass, outrebounding CBU 45-44. Senior
Sydney Ward led the way with nine rebounds, four on the offensive end, while redshirt sophomore
Stella Szabo doubled her previous career-high and grabbed eight boards. Junior
Marina Radocaj was efficient on the glass, netting seven boards in just 16 minutes of action.
Szabo also set a new career-high in scoring for the second time this season, finishing with eight points.
In the coming week, the Tigers have two games – the first is the road opener on Tuesday against power four opponent California on Tuesday before returning home to face group of five foe Seton Hall on Sunday.
Tipoff on Tuesday from Haas Pavilion is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on the ACC Network X.
