Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

No. 7 Men’s Water Polo Wins Weekend Opener over No. 19 Harvard

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Scoring timely goals in the fourth quarter, the No. 7 Pacific men's water polo program held off No. 19 Harvard for a 13-12 victory Friday at the Sullivan Aquatic Center in the first of four games at the Julian Fraser Memorial.

The game was even at 10-10 when Pacific (11-5, 4-1 WCC) went on a decisive 3-0 run midway through the fourth. Sophomore Yoav Rendler scored the go-ahead goal with 4:17 remaining and sophomore Ori Buzaglo and freshman Petar Popovic increased it to 13-10 with 2:12 to go.

Harvard (13-7, 5-0 NWPC), which entered the match on an eight-game winning-streak, made one last push and trimmed it to 13-12 with 44 seconds left. The Crimson got the ball back with an opportunity to tie it, but a final shot went wide of the cage and the Tigers ran out the clock.

It was the fourth consecutive victory for Pacific, which has hit its stride late in the season. It includes wins over No. 7 San Jose State, No. 8 Pepperdine and No. 10 LMU.

Popovic led the Tigers with three goals and two assists. Reigning West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Week winner, freshman Apostolos Georgaras, registered two goals and five assists. Fellow freshman Borisz Kasa-Gal tallied two goals an assist.

Freshman Kiss Gergerly, the reigning WCC Player of the Week honoree, stayed hot with 11 saves. He's notched at least 11 saves in each of the last five games.

Pacific improved to 9-1 all-time against Harvard.

Up next, the Tigers will play two games Saturday at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center, hosted by San Jose State. It begins with a 9 a.m. contest against Bucknell and is followed by a 3:40 p.m. game against Pomona-Pitzer.

Looking ahead, Pacific will look to defend its West Coast Conference Regular Season Championship at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Eberhardt Aquatics Center against No. 13 Cal Baptist. A win for Pacific would solidify the title and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
