STOCKTON, Calif. -Â A goal in the 51st minute by junior
Jose Maria Barrera broke a deadlocked game as the Pacific men's soccer team won its season opener 1-0 over UC Davis on Thursday night at Knoles Field.
Â
"I'm super proud of the guys tonight," Pacific head coach
Adam Reeves said. "We've been preaching about the defensive side of things. We competed and battled all night. Being a 1-0 game, it was the perfect ending for me. UC Davis challenged us, but ultimately, we found the goal and worked hard to come away with the victory."
Â
Barrera received a clean pass from graduate student
Kai Sullivan and then whistled a shot past the Aggie goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead and eventual game-winner for the Tigers (1-0). Barrera led all
players with three shots on goal.
Â
Â
UC Davis (0-1) pressed hard to counter, but goalkeeper
Joshua Moya stood his ground for the remainder of the contest, earning his third career clean sheet after making a career-high 10 saves. Senior
Emmanuel Obiefuna and junior
Matteo Carbone were steady forces on defense, logging the complete 90 minutes during the contest.
Â
The Tigers look to carry their momentum into the upcoming road trip as Pacific faces Missouri State on Monday at 5 p.m. at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
