TUCSON, Ariz. - The Pacific women's soccer team hits the road for the first time in the 2024 campaign, heading to the Grand Canyon State to take on Arizona on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Murphey Field.
"After a hard-fought season opener, we are geared up to hit the road and face a Big 12 opponent," Pacific co-head coach
Danesha Adams said. "The challenge ahead is significant, but our ladies are more than ready. We know that games like these are crucial in preparing us for the battles that lie ahead in our tough conference. The journey continues, and we are all in."
The Tigers (1-0-0) enter the competition following a season-opening 2-1 victory over Houston Christian at Knoles Field behind goals from junior
Alexis Pashales and graduate student
Taylor Curtis.
The Wildcats (1-0-0) opened their 2024 season with a 1-0 win over Grand Canyon on Thursday, securing the victory from a first-half goal from Nicole Dallin.
Arizona, who shifted to the Big 12 Conference this season, was selected to finish in a tie for tenth place out of 16 teams in the 2024 Big 12 Conference preseason coaches poll. Dallin was named to the Big 12 Preseason All-Conference Team. Dallin started in all 19 matches during the 2023 season, playing 1,300 minutes, and led the squad with nine goals.
The Tigers began the season in a tie for eighth place in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll with 38 points alongside conference newcomer Oregon State.
Through the first game of the season, Curtis leads Pacific with six shots (two shots on goal), including an early second-half goal in the win over Houston Christian. Pashales, who returns as Pacific's top scorer from 2023, found the back of the net on Thursday on a feed into the box by junior
Ka'ui Lani Pinkney. Pinkney and redshirt junior
Ariana Gronauer have the assists on each Tiger goal this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Libby Davy made seven saves and faced 15 shots while allowing just one goal in the home-opening victory.
Pacific and Arizona meet for the third time in program history. The Tigers own an all-time 2-0 record over the Wildcats, including a 3-0 road victory during the 2011 season. In 2012, Pacific secured a 2-1 win over Arizona in Stockton.
The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
