STOCKTON, Calif. – First-year head coach Dave Smart announced the first newcomer of the 2024-25 season after signing his former student-athlete Lamar Washington, who transfers from Texas Tech.
Â
Washington, a 6-4, 200 guard from Portland, Oregon, spent the last two seasons with the Red Raiders. Last season with Smart as assistant coach, Texas Tech advanced to the NCAA Tournament and finished 23-11 overall and 11-7 in a loaded Big 12 Conference.
Â
"Lamar will be a building block for this program moving forward. He will be a huge piece in what we want to do to turn this program around," Smart said. "We could not be more thrilled to have Lamar with us."
Â
Washington played in all 30 games last year and all 32 games as a freshman in 2022-23. He registered a career-high 13 points and five steals as a freshman against No. 13 Kansas State. As a sophomore, he averaged 2.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.
Â
Out of high school, Washington was an ESPN 4-Star recruit and averaged 13.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game as a senior at Arizona Compass Prep. It came after a monster junior year at Jefferson High School where he shined with 31.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
Â
The hybrid guard was the 2021 Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year along with the Oregon Max Prep Player of the Year. He racked up 2,135 points in his high school career along with 823 assists and 705 rebounds.
Â
Washington received offers from Texas Tech, Texas, Auburn, Oregon State and Washington State in high school. He also played football in high school and was coached by Houston Lillard, the older brother of Damian Lillard on the Milwaukee Bucks.
Â
Washington will be pursuing a degree in Media X at Pacific.
