PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pacific baseball team put together a spirited effort late in the ball game, but fell short in a 4-2 loss to Portland on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
The Tigers (5-26, 1-8 WCC) received an effective pitching performance from junior
Jakob Guardado on the mound and a key game-tying single from senior
Chase Graves in the late stages to spoil a strong start by Portland (20-9, 6-0 WCC).
Sophomore
Andrew Sloan recorded his third multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 at the plate today.
Guardado made his eighth start of the season, throwing 5.1 innings for his longest outing of the 2024 campaign. The native of Tustin, Calif., allowed just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out two batters.
Portland broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out single to take a 1-0 lead. The Pilots tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of hits.
In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore
Jack Metcho singled, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball to get the Tigers on the board and cut into Portland's lead, 2-1.
The Tigers would not go away without a fight. With two runners on and after a nine-pitch battle, Graves singled to left field and tied the game up, 2-2, in the top of the eighth.
Portland responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice to retake the lead, 4-2.
The Tigers got the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but could not manufacture any runs, resulting in the 4-2 final score.
Pacific returns home to take on CSU Bakersfield at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Klein Family Field.
