Late Rally Lifts Dons Past Tigers to Even Series

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pacific baseball team dropped the middle game of the series against San Francisco, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

The Tigers (8-34, 3-11 WCC) carried a lead late into the contest, but the Dons (18-25, 2-12 WCC) rallied with a three-run bottom of the eighth inning to capture the win and even up the series.

Senior Chase Graves contributed a three-hit performance for a second consecutive day, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two singles, an RBI double and a run scored. Sophomore Jake Tandy and sophomore Kaden Petersen each collected a pair of RBIs. Sophomore Jack Metcho reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a single, two walks and his team-leading ninth stolen base of the season.

Redshirt junior Josh Souza made his tenth start of the season, going 2.0 innings and allowing one earned run while striking out one batter.

For a second day in a row, the Tigers struck first, scoring three times in the top of the first inning to take charge of a 3-0 lead. Tandy knocked in his team-leading 29th and 30th RBIs of the season while Petersen's RBI groundout scored in Tandy for the third run of the inning.

The Dons responded in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run on an RBI groundout to cut into the deficit, 3-1.

In the top of the third inning, a one-out single by freshman Gabe Camacho presented Graves with an opportunity to score him and he did just that, crushing a double to right center for his second hit of the day. Petersen followed suit with a double of his own to the other gap, giving Pacific a 5-1 lead.

Three runs came across for USF in the bottom of the fourth as the home team utilized a pair of doubles in the frame to make the score, 5-4, in favor of the Tigers.

Pitching and defense held down the fort for both sides until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Dons rallied for three runs and take a 7-5 lead. USF shut down the Tigers in order in the top of the ninth, holding on for the 7-5 victory.

Up next, Pacific will return to action at noon tomorrow with the rubber match of the series against San Francisco.
