STOCKTON, Calif.- The Pacific softball team took both games in the conference series doubleheader against San Diego, downing the Toreros 3-0 then 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers hold their Pink Game tomorrow, Sunday, April 21 at noon, to close out the series.
"Amazing day pitching with Amiyah [Aponte] and Avery [Croxall]," head coach
Brian Kolze shared. "We didn't do a ton offensively, but with what opportunities we had today, we made all of them count. We found a way to manufacture runs in that first game and in that second game we bounced back really well and we found a way to manufacture a really big insurance run at the bottom of the sixth. Amiyah and Avery were lights out, they showed a lot of heart getting through a lot. I'm really proud of them and I am really proud of how the team played today."
In game one, the Tigers scored all three runs without recording a hit, taking advantage of miscues from the Toreros. Sophomore
Olivia Silvestre got Pacific on the board first after a throwing error by San Diego's catcher allowed the left fielder to score. A sacrifice fly from senior
Scarlett Lloyd brought in Scully, putting the Tigers up 2-0 at the bottom of the first. Another sacrifice, from senior
Rian Dirmeyer, allowed Silvestre to score her second run of the game, cementing the final score 3-0.
Senior
Amiyah Aponte tied a career high 7.0 innings pitched after getting the starting nod in game one. The senior pitcher faced 27 batters and struck out two, allowing five hits without allowing a run to capture her second win of the season.
San Diego struck first in game two to avoid two shutouts. After going up 1-0 at the top of the first, the Toreros went scoreless the next six innings. Scully responded with her third home run of the season to tie the game 1-1. The junior ended the afternoon with two hits and two runs in both appearances, while registering 10 putouts in game two.
Lloyd registered her second hit of the day to draw in Dirmeyer to put the Tigers up 2-1 to close out the first inning. Dirmeyer went on to score the insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after a single from junior right fielder
Talissa Montez. Lloyd went for two hits and two RBI on the day, while Dirmeyer recorded two runs and her 11th multi-hit game after notching two in the final game of the afternoon.
Senior
Avery Croxall pitched through all 7.0 innings en route to her sixth win of the season. She faced 33 batters and struck out four, allowing only eight hits and a run.
The Tigers conclude their series with San Diego on Sunday, April 21 for their Pink Game.
