BERKELEY, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team fell to California, 17-1, in seven innings on Tuesday night at Evans Diamond.
The Tigers (5-23, 1-5 WCC) searched through their bench for offense while the Golden Bears (16-10) scored early and often on a cold night in the Bay Area.
Sophomore
Jacob Smith made the start on the mound for the Tigers, facing four batters before sophomore
Ryan Martinez came on in relief and pitched 2.0 innings.
Junior
Jakob Guardado started a rally for the Tigers in the top of the third as he led off with a sharp single to left center field. Sophomore
Rylan Evans drove in the Tigers' lone run of the night on an RBI groundout to the right side, scoring redshirt sophomore
Andre Vidal. Freshman
Matthew Troutner earned his first at-bat of the season in the effort offensively.
Sophomore
Jack Metcho drew a walk, meaning the shortstop has reached base safely in all but one game this season.
The Bears scored six in the bottom of the first, followed by two more in the bottom of the second to take an early 8-0 lead.
A grand slam capped a five-run inning for Cal in the bottom of the third, making the score 13-1 in favor of the home team.
The Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, resulting in the final score of 17-1.
Pacific returns to action at 6 pm on Friday, resuming West Coast Conference action at Portland.
