Fruitful Fifth Inning Powers Tigers Past San Diego

STOCKTON, Calif.- The Pacific softball team opened the four game series against the visiting San Diego Toreros with a 4-2 victory at Bill Simoni Field. The win snapped San Diego's seven game winning streak over the Tigers.

"It was just a great way to start the conference home stand," head coach Brian Kolze shared after the game. "It was a pitcher's duel early, but we put together a big inning and made some things happen. Vanessa [Strong] was amazing tonight. She has pitched her heart out all year and was light's on from start to finish. I was really proud about how we came out against a really hot team."

Seven different Tigers recorded hits in Pacific's second conference win of the season, while four different players scored runs. Sophomore Asia Lee led the Tigers with two hits in two at bats. A base hit from sophomore Jordan Hayes allowed three runs as senior Rian Dirmeyer, junior Delaney Scully and sophomore Olivia Silvestre all scored on the opportunity.

Silvestre recorded her 26th run of the season, while earning an RBI. Scully ended with a run and a hit while leading the Tigers with six putouts. Dirmeyer also recorded a hit and one run, extending her hitting streak to 12 games.

Senior Reagan Hamilton struck first in fifth after Silvestre reached first on a fielder's choice. She ended the game with one run, one hit and seven putouts. Facing two outs, Hayes  set up the draw of the remaining three runs to break through the shutout. She ended the day with a hit and 3 RBI. The Toreros got two back in the top of the seventh, but graduate student Vanessa Strong iced the game, striking out the final batter.

Strong pitched for another season high 7.0 innings. She faced 29 batters and struck out a season high seven. She allowed seven hits and two runs, shutting out the Toreros through six innings en route to her first win of the season.

The Tigers return tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, for a doubleheader set to start at noon. Game two follows directly after.
