MORAGA, Calif.- The Pacific softball team played its second doubleheader of the weekend after weather moved Saturday's contest to Sunday. While the Tigers split the first of the series, the Gaels took both games of the second and Pacific fell 10-3, 3-1.
"Extremely frustrating day," head coach
Brian Kolze shared after the day. " We didn't play well enough in the first game, though we got some great relief innings from Amiyah [Aponte]. Unfortunately in game two, Desi [Smith] threw well enough to win, but we made some physical and mental mistakes that helped Saint Mary's. I was very happy with how we swung the bats in game two, we just couldn't score runs."
Senior
Rian Dirmeyer led the Tigers with three hits on the day, including two in the final game of the series. Five different Tigers notched a hit on the afternoon, while both Dirmeyer and senior
Scarlett Lloyd recorded multi-hit games between both contests. Lloyd led Pacific through game one with two hits and a RBI, while junior
Talissa Montez added a hit and a RBI.
Junior
Delaney Scully combined for nine putouts over the afternoon, while senior
Reagan Hamilton led both teams in game two with six putouts. Four separate Tigers scored runs as Dirmeyer broke through first in game two. All three runs of game one were scored between the fourth and fifth innings, after taking advantage of miscues from Saint Mary's.
Four Tigers saw action from the circle with senior
Scarlett Lloyd getting the start in game one. She faced five batters through the top of the first before senior
Amiyah Aponte pitched through 5.0 innings. Aponte faced 22 batters, struck out two, while allowing five hits and three runs. Freshman
Justice Alcaraz closed out the final 1.0 innings, facing eight batters while striking out one, allowing four hits and two runs.
Junior
Desiree Smith started and pitched through all 6.0 innings of game two. The junior faced 28 batters, while tying a career high five strikeouts, allowing six hits and three runs, though only one was earned.
Opening the day, the Tigers quickly faced an early deficit with the Gaels getting in five runs after the first inning. They went quiet though four innings, while the Tigers chipped at the lead with three runs of their own in the fourth and fifth innings. Taking advantage of a Saint Mary's error, Hamilton reached on a fielder's choice, earning the RBI as sophomore
Jordan Hayes scored. Junior
Rory Schuck came in next, scoring on a wild pitch as a pinch runner for Lloyd.
Pacific pulled within two after a single from Lloyd brought in sophomore
Olivia Silvestre, but the Gaels surged through the bottom of the fifth and six to cement the game 10-3.
In game two, Dirmeyer faced two outs before hitting a single through left center. After stealing second, the senior was poised for the score as Hayes singled through the right side, drawing in Dirmeyer. The Tigers took the early 1-0 lead and shut out Saint Mary's though the opening two innings.
The Gaels tied it in the bottom of the third before breaking free after a Tiger error in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams went scoreless through the remainder as the Gaels took game two 3-1.
Pacific returns home for a three day, four game series against San Diego with game one set for Friday, April 19 at 4 p.m.
