Pacific Advances in WNIT with Victory Over Cal Poly

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific women's basketball advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament with a 63-43 win over Cal Poly on Thursday at Alex G. Spanos Center.

Junior Elizabeth Elliott led with 16 points while grabbing five rebounds and matching her career-high four blocks for the fifth time. Senior Kadie Deaton finished with 11 points and a season-high nine rebounds.

"We knew that it was going to come down to who worked harder," said Elliott. "I think after coming off a big run in Vegas, we're coming off this like really high high. And now it's like where do we find the momentum to keep going? Tonight was a good getting our feet wet. We know that we're going to have to play a lot harder if we want to go a lot further in this tournament. Hopefully next game we're where we want to be."

Pacific (19-14) jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter.

Cal Poly went on an 11-5 at the start of the second to make it a four-point game at the 4:35 mark, 19-15. Elliott hit two free throws that ignited an 11-0 run for the Tigers. Graduate student Cecilia Holmberg drained a three that extended Pacific's advantage 30-15. The Mustangs responded with eight unanswered points to trim the Tigers' lead to 30-23 going into halftime.

Following a low scoring third quarter, Pacific gained momentum in the fourth outscoring the Mustangs 22-12. The Tigers' would shoot 8-of-16 and 5-of-8 at the free throw line in the final 10 minutes to come away with the win.

Overall, Pacific was 22-of-55 (.400) with 5-of-13 (.385) from the three-point line and 14-of-19 (.737) at the free throw line. The Tigers held Cal Poly to two or three field goals in three of the four quarters. The Mustangs finished with 14-of-65 (.215) from the field, 7-of-29 (.241) behind the arc and 8-of-10 (.800) at the charity stripe.

Pacific registered a 24-12 advantage in the paint, 16 points off 13 offensive rebounds and 11 on the fast break.

"There were some inconsistencies with the whole game and that makes it tough to get into a flow," head coach Bradley Davis said. "We had a couple stretches where we did get into our game and that's what pushed the lead. Fortunately, we were able to get to the free throw line in the fourth quarter."

Up next, Pacific heads to Minneapolis where it will take on Minnesota in the WNIT second round at 5 p.m. PT/7 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
