Tigers Comeback Halted by Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif.- Senior Rian Dirmeyer blasted a triple at the top of the seventh inning, eventually coming in for the score to cut Fresno State's lead to one, but the comeback got snuffed out by the Bulldogs and the Tigers fell 3-2 on the road.

"Just a really great effort tonight," head coach Brian Kolze shared after the game. "I thought we showed a lot of heart and fight. Tough one to lose by how we played, but they should be very proud of themselves."

Three Tigers recorded two hits throughout the evening. Dirmeyer led the Tigers with two hits and a run alongside junior Delaney Scully. Sophomore Olivia Silvestre had two hits and an RBI, while tying a season high five putouts. Scully led all Tigers with six putouts.

Sophomore Jordan Hayes knocked a single to draw in Dirmeyer late in the evening. She finished with a hit and an RBI, while junior Nina Davis recorded the final hit of the night for Pacific.

Graduate student Vanessa Strong got the start from the circle, pitching through 3.0 innings. She faced 13 batters, while allowing five hits and one run. Senior Amiyah Aponte pitched through the last 3.0 innings, while also facing 13 batters. She struck out one, while allowing two hits and two runs.

The Tigers out hit the Bulldogs eight to seven and cleaned up defensively, committing no errors through seven innings. Having been shut out since the third inning, Fresno State faced two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but recorded two pivotal hits that set up two runs to give the Bulldogs the lead that they didn't relent.

Dirmeyer faced an out before hitting her first triple of the season. Senior Scarlett Lloyd was walked to get two Tigers on base. Junior Nikki Enriquez took to first to pinch run for Lloyd before Hayes stepped up to the plate. She dished a single to right field to draw in Dirmeyer to get the Tigers within a run. Sophomore Amanda Bricker reached first facing two outs, but Enriquez got caught out at third, halting the comeback in its tracks.

The Tigers return to Bill Simoni Field tomorrow, Thursday, March 21 to play Portland State at 3 p.m.
