Iowa, Sacramento State Get Around Pacific in Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif.- The Pacific softball team hosted Iowa and Sacramento State for the first day of its round robin tournament and, despite having the pieces, the Tigers couldn't put either away, falling to the Hawkeyes 5-0 and the Hornets 3-1.

"Tough day, but the pitchers threw well to keep us in both games," head coach Brian Kolze said. "Really didn't do enough offensively in the first game and Vanessa threw much better than the score indicated. We did not play good defense and gave them extra opportunities that they took advantage of."

He followed, "Desiree threw a tremendous game. It was a one run game and came down to one pitch. At the same time, we got enough runners on, but we need to create more runs. We can't just score one run in two games and expect to win games. We have to keep battling to put those hits together. Their fight is tremendous but the results just aren't what we want."

Senior Rian Dirmeyer led the Tigers through both games totaling three hits and a run. Junior Talissa Montez notched a hit in both contests, while six Tigers, including Montez and Dirmeyer, recorded a hit against the Hornets.

Graduate student Vanessa Strong earned the start from the circle against the Hawkeyes. Through 7.0 innings pitched and 32 batters faced, she allowed five runs and seven hits, while striking out four batters. Junior Desiree Smith got the starting nod against the Hornets, pitching the full 7.0 innings. She faced 31 batters and struck out two, while allowing three runs and eight hits.

Junior Delaney Scully tied a season high 12 putouts against Sacramento State, to lead both teams. Earlier in the afternoon, she accounted for nine putouts against the Hawkeyes to lead all players.

Pacific revisits both teams tomorrow, taking on the Hawkeyes at noon and the Hornets at 4:30 p.m. Iowa and Sacramento State play a second neutral game in between.
