STOCKTON, Calif.- The Pacific softball team battled North Dakota State through an offensive stalemate with tough pitching and a defensive stronghold, but the Bison broke through in the eighth inning to edge out the Tigers 2-1 at home.
"It was a game where someone had to win and someone had to lose," head coach
Brian Kolze shared after the game. "We played a great game, pitched unbelievably. Avery was amazing in her first start of the year; we just didn't do enough offensively. We made a couple mistakes in the eighth inning, and it came back to bite us, but we swung the bat well and we had the pitching we needed. We just have to get more lead off runners on to give ourselves more scoring opportunities so we can consistently win more one run games."
Nine of the 24 games played this season have been decided by one run. The Tigers (8-16) are 3-6 in those contests and 1-2 in 8+ innings with similar run margins.
Senior
Rian Dirmeyer scored the lone run of the afternoon after a double to right center from sophomore
Jordan Hayes brought her in for the score. Dirmeyer ended the day with one hit and one run in three at-bats. Hayes finished with one hit, one RBI and three assists.
Five different Tigers, including Dirmeyer, recorded a hit over the eight innings affair. Junior
Nina Davis went for a season high nine putouts while recording a hit in three at bats.
Leading from the circle in her first start was senior
Avery Croxall, who pitched through 7.0 innings. She faced 25 batters, struck out seven for a new season high, while allowing one run and three hits. Junior
Desiree Smith closed out the game for the Tigers, facing seven batters, striking out one, while allowing one hit and one run.
The Tigers continue their homestand, hosting Sacramento State and Iowa in a round robin series on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at Bill Simoni Field.
