Two Homers, Two Wins; Tigers Go Back-to-Back in Purple Classic

PHOENIX, Ariz.- Senior Rian Dirmeyer returned to her hometown and hammered two home runs in two games to kick start the Pacific softball team's two win start at the Purple Classic. The Tigers defeated New Mexico 5-2 before downing Toledo 6-4.

"The team played tremendous today in all phases," head coach Brian Kolze said. "We got great pitching out of all of our pitchers and played great defense behind them. Offensively, we had outstanding performances from lots of people, including Rian Dirmyere, Jordan Hayes, Olivia Silvestre and Asia Lee. Scoring most of our runs with two outs today was key to us getting the victories."

Dirmeyer ended day one with two runs, three hits and 2 RBI in six total at bats. She led the Tigers against New Mexico with four assists, while recording three putouts. Sophomore Olivia Silvestre aided with four hits and 4 RBI in seven appearances at the plate, while sophomore Jordan Hayes garnered three runs and four hits in four at bats.

Junior Delaney Scully and junior Nina Davis each recorded five putouts against the Lobos. Scully led all Tigers with eight putouts against Toledo, while Hayes went for three assists and three putouts.

Four Tigers saw action from the circle, with graduate student Vanessa Strong getting the starting nod against New Mexico. Through 3.0 innings pitched she saw 14 batters, while striking out three and only allowing two runs and six hits. Junior Desiree Smith started against the Rockets and faced 17 batters in 4.1 innings pitched, where she allowed three runs and five hits.

Senior Avery Croxall and freshman Justice Alcaraz each recorded wins from the circle for the Tigers. Croxall only allowed three hits through 4.0 innings pitched while facing 14 batters. She struck out two batters to close out the game for Pacific against the Lobos. Alcaraz came in for 2.2 innings and faced 11 batters, only allowing three hits and one run for her first collegiate win.

Sophomore Asia Lee kicked off the scoring for the Tigers against the Lobos, doubling to right center for 2 RBI, drawing in junior Kyla Eck and Hayes in the bottom of the second. Silvestre brought in Lee after a base hit, putting the Tigers up 3-0.

New Mexico pulled in two runs at the top of the third, but Dirmeyer took to the plate and blasted a home run to right center. Hayes nabbed the final run of the first game, scoring on a wild pitch.

The Tigers followed up the winning effort carrying the momentum into game two. Senior Reagan Hamilton and Hayes each scored on an error by Toledo's catcher to put Pacific up 2-0 at the top of the second. Dirmeyer struck again, this time to left field, hitting her second home run of the day and fifth this season.

The Rockets scored the next four runs, taking over the lead at the top of the fifth. Down 4-3, Silvestre stepped up facing two outs. She doubled to left field, drawing in three runners to reclaim the lead 6-4.

Pacific returns tomorrow for two more games in Phoenix. The Tigers face Montana at 10:30 a.m. PT before battling host Grand Canyon at 3:30 p.m. PT.
