Softball Splits Day One of Easton Classic with UIC, Colorado State

FULLERTON, Calif.- Pacific softball went 1-1 on its opening day, defeating UIC 7-6 before falling to Colorado State 8-0 on Friday evening at Anderson Family Field.

"The second game isn't exactly how we wanted to finish the day," head coach Brian Kolze shared, "We pretty much didn't do our job in all areas, but the positive is how we held on in the first game and were successful. We are all looking forward to tomorrow. Individually, we got some great performances from Amiyah Aponte, Reagan Hamilton and Olivia Silvestre."

Senior Amiyah Aponte led from the circle in Pacific's first game of the season. Through seven innings against UIC (0-2), she struck out seven batters, shutting out the Flames through four innings. Two pivotal strikeouts came at the top of the seventh as UIC eventually pulled within one. The Flames fell after senior Rian Dirmeyer captured the final out to propel the Tigers to their first win of the season.

Redshirt sophomore Olivia Silvestre and senior Reagan Hamilton combined for four runs and four hits against UIC. Hamilton led all players with 4 RBI. Her double midway through the bottom of the first and 2 RBI got the Tigers on the board after UIC started the evening up 3-0. The momentum carried through the bottom of the first to put Pacific up 4-3.

From there, Hamilton continued to shine, hammering the lone home run of the game to put Pacific up 7-3 at the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers held strong to edge out the Flames 7-6 to start the year 1-0.

Pacific followed up the win with a battle against Colorado State (1-0). The Rams got to work quickly and shut out the Tigers through seven innings. Three pitchers saw action against the Rams as junior Desiree Smith got the start. The Tigers bats cooled in their second game, garnering four hits to the nine they had against UIC. Silvestre led all Pacific batters with three hits.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Feb. 10, for two more games in the Easton Classic. They take on Southern Utah at 2 p.m. and host Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m.
