WAIMEA, Hawaii – The Pacific men's golf team recorded a nine-under-par of 279 and finished the first day of the Amer Ari Invitational on the Mauna Lani Golf Course in 14th place in the 20-team field.
The event is stacked with four of the top 10 teams in the country and 13 teams ranked in the top 50. North Carolina leads the event with a first-day score of 26-under-par 262.
Freshman
Carlos Astiazaran tallied the low round for the Tigers, carding a five-under-par 67. The native of Tucson, Ariz., recorded six birdies and finished the opening day in a tie for 12th place. Oklahoma State's Preston Stout leads the event through the first 18 holes with a score of ten-under-par 62.
Fifth-year
Maverick Pavletich finished the opening day in a tie for 22nd place with a four-under-par 68. Pavletich notched six birdies, tied for the team lead with Astiazaran. Senior
Petr Janik wrapped up his first 18 holes with a one-under-par 71. Senior
Alex Barclay and sophomore
Ian Fritz rounded out the Pacific lineup with one-over-par 73 and three-over-par 75, respectively. Junior
Daniel Henely competed as an individual, earning a ten-over-par 82.
"We had a great start to the week," Pacific head coach
John Cook said. "Carlos and Maverick had very solid rounds. Maverick had a miraculous par on his last hole. We are looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow morning."
