Softball Falls to Utah Tech, CSUN in First Day Matador Diamond Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.- The Pacific softball team dropped its first two contests of the Matador Diamond Classic, falling to Utah Tech 2-0 and host CSUN 3-2.

"I thought we played much better today without winning results," said head coach Brian Kolze. "The team played extremely hard and we pitched the best we have so far this season. We just need to figure out how to push through and get some wins."

Sophomore Olivia Silvestre came away with three hits and one RBI at six at bats through both games, leading with a .412 batting average against Utah Tech and .450 batting average in Pacific's game against CSUN.

Junior Delaney Scully went for nine put outs for a season high against CSUN, while senior Reagan Hamilton led all Tigers with eight putouts against Utah Tech.

Senior Avery Croxall led Pacific from the circle through four innings pitched against Utah Tech delivering six strikeouts. Croxall brought her ERA to .68 this season in five appearances and 10.1 innings pitched to lead all Tigers.

Three pitchers saw action with senior Amiyah Aponte earning the starting nod against the Trailblazers and graduate student Vanessa Strong getting the start against CSUN. Strong allowed four hits and three runs through six innings pitched against the Matadors.

Junior Nina Davis led off the scoring for Pacific with one RBI against CSUN, bringing in senior Reagan Hamilton to put the Tigers up 1-0 at the top of the second.

Silvestre doubled to center field at the top of the fifth for one RBI, allowing junior Kyla Eck to come in for the score. The Matadors tied it 2-2 at the bottom of the fifth.

The stalemate reached its conclusion after CSUN struck at the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2.

Pacific returns tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17 for two more games against Utah Tech and CSUN. The Tigers play the Trailblazers at 10 a.m. and conclude the Matador Diamond Classic against CSUN at noon.
