ROME, Ga. – Reaching the semifinals (and still playing) in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Conference Masters Championship has earned junior
Tiago Silva from the Pacific men's tennis program a spot in the NCAA Individual Championships.
Â
Silva won three matches in two days at the Rome Tennis Center to advance. Silva was the lone representative from the West Coast Conference in the singles draw and qualified alongside semifinalists from Notre Dame, Georgia and Western Michigan.
Â
"I am so proud of Tiago. His professionalism, work ethic and leadership has taken a leap forward this year. There is no secret to success, but implementing excellence every day is not easy. It's great to see his hard work and consistent practices are paying off already. I am very excited to see what he can do at the NCAA Tournament," said head coach and reigning West Coast Conference Coach of the Year
Robin Goodman.
Â
Silva's qualifying victory came in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 over Baylor's Zsombor Velcz, who was the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Silva also notched wins over Tennessee State and Alabama State, the top singles players from the Ohio Valley Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference, respectively.
Â
"This is something I really wanted, my goal this fall was to qualify for the NCAA Championships. I have to say thanks to everyone at Pacific, especially my teammates, my coaches and everyone that is involved with us. I qualified because of them, they push me every day," Silva said. "I will be ready for tomorrow. I'm still in the semi's, and now that I'm qualified why not win the tournament here."
Â
Silva will face Western Michigan's Anton Arzhankin at 7 a.m. (PT) Saturday in the semifinals of the ITA Masters. Regardless of the result, Silva advanced to the
NCAA Championships on Nov. 19-24 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
