Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Pacific Edges Brown For Fifth Straight Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The #6 ranked Pacific men's water polo team (5-0) finished off the Bruno Classic by defeating the host Brown squad (3-2) by a 13-12 score at the Coleman Aquatics Center.

"I'm really happy with this young group," said James Graham. "That game was fantastic for building our mentality and identity for this season. In that game, we had to deal with a lot of adversity, from playing the home team at the end of the tournament to the way the game was unfolding to foul trouble. We had to deep into our bench, including playing our backup goalkeeper. We went from Plan A to things way down the contingency plan, probably Plan F.

"The guys kept their composure. The team found ways to win. That's what championship habits do. It comes from competitive stamina. It was a good win. Brown is a good team and will be ranked higher than it is right now."

The game was tied at seven entering the fourth quarter, and again at nine, 10 and 11. Brown was never able to get into the lead in the quarter. Junior Daniel Viscia scored the go-ahead goal for Pacific with 2:18 remaining in the contest for a 12-11 lead.

After three straights possessions without a shot, Pacific junior Gil Gvishi hit shot from 12 feet out that was redirected by the field player into the goal, giving the Tigers a 13-11 edge with 29 seconds to play. Brown scored with four seconds remaining to account for the final score, and Pacific ran the clock out for its fifth win of the season.

Viscia finished the game with a team-best five goals. Gvishi and fifth-year senior Rene Peralta each scored three goals. Junior Cooper Gaderson and senior Aleksa Šišakovic each scored one.

Pacific scored outscored its opponents 101-44 over the weekend, averaging more than 20 goals per contest. Šišakovic finished the weekend with a team-high 16 goals followed Viscia, 13, Peralta, 12, junior Filip Norell with 11 and graduate student Stefan Vavic with 10. Senior goalkeeper Lewis Gale started all five contests with newcomer John Winters seeing action in three.

The Tigers have a week off before returning to competition by opening the home season on Saturday, Sept. 16 with a 1 p.m. match with #3 UCLA (4-0). On Sunday, Sept. 17, Pacific hosts #1 California (4-0), the defending national champions, at Chris Kjeldsen Pool at the Douglass M. Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
