Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Michael Gutnick

#10 Tigers sink Stags, Sagehens on Day One of Gary Troyer Tournament

Claremont, Calif. – The #10 Pacific men's water polo team took care of business on the opening day of the 2023 Gary Troyer Tournament, grinding out a 13-12 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, followed by a 14-12 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.

With the pair of victories, the Tigers (7-2) extend their unbeaten road record to seven straight games this season.

Junior Gil Gvishi put on a masterful display on offense throughout the two games, scoring a combined ten goals, including a single-game, career-high six goals against Pomona-Pitzer.

In the afternoon win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Tigers rattled off three straight tallies after surrendering a pair of goals to take a 3-2 lead through eight minutes. The two sides battled back and forth, trading goals in the second frame with Pacific carrying a 7-5 advantage into halftime.

The Stags were able to string together four consecutive goals in the third frame to eventually tie the score up at 9 apiece heading into the last period of regulation. A pair of goals by Gvishi sparked a surge offensively for the Tigers as Pacific resisted the final attacks by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to hold on to a 13-12 victory.

In the nightcap against Pomona-Pitzer, the Tigers and Sagehens drew to an even 3-3 at the end of the first period. Pacific took a slight 6-5 edge into halftime, thanks to a goal in the final possession of the frame by Gvishi.

Junior Daniel Viscia ignited the offense in the third period, which saw the Tigers score a period-high five goals and extend Pacific's lead to 11-8. Pomona-Pitzer rallied in the fourth period to make the contest closer, but Gvishi put the icing on the cake with his sixth goal of the game on the power play. The defense, led by senior Lewis Gale, played a large role late in the frame to not allow any more scores in the final three minutes.

Saturday will wrap up the Gary Troyer Tournament as the Tigers take on Redlands at 11:40 a.m. and Cal Lutheran at 2:20 p.m.
