FRESNO, Calif. – The Pacific men's golf team finished the final round of the Nick Watney Invitational on a high note with a round-low 272, earning a fourth-place finish in the 14-team field with a 25-under-par 827 at the Fort Washington Country Club.
With four Tiger golfers scoring under par on the final day, Pacific recorded its best team placement in the Nick Watney Invitational since 2014 (1st place). Freshman
Carlos Astiazaran and sophomore
Timothy Jung cruised on the golf course, putting together their best performances as a Tiger, and finishing among the top ten on the player leaderboard.
"We had another solid team effort today," said Pacific head coach
John Cook. "Tim had three rounds in the 60's and had his best finish individually. Carlos played fantastic today, posting a bogey free 65 and his first top ten in college."
Astiazaran moved up 11 spots from day one to finish the tournament in a tie for sixth place with a ten-under 203 (67, 71, 65). The native of Tucson, Ariz., tallied a bogey-free six-under 65 in the third round, which tied for the third-best final round of the Nick Watney Invitational with Seattle's Blake Kukula.
Jung followed his steady first two rounds Monday with another exceptional display in the tournament finale, finishing in a tie for ninth place with a nine-under 204 (69, 67, 68). Jung paced the Tigers with 16 birdies, which represented a fourth of the team's overall total. Pacific's 64 birdies ranked second in the field, only trailing Cal State Fullerton by four birdies.
After scoring back-to-back rounds on the first day with one-under 70s, senior
Petr Janik capped the Nick Watney Invitational with a two-under 69, securing 21st place with a four-under 209 (70, 70, 69).
Senior
Maverick Pavletich found his groove to return to one-under par 70 in the third round, completing his tournament in a tie for 28th place with a two-under 211 (70, 71, 70). Senior
Alex Barclay rounded out the team scoring with a ten-over 211 (72, 74, 77), while freshman
Samuel Pampling wrapped up his first collegiate tournament as an individual and posted a 16-over 229 (83, 73, 73).
"We will take a lot of positives from this tournament as we prepare for Oregon State in a couple of weeks," said Cook.
Next up, Pacific returns to action on Monday, Oct. 9, as the Tigers travel to compete in the Oregon State Invitational, hosted by Oregon State at the Trysting Tree Golf Club.
