SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team (10-18, 3-8) dropped a low-scoring bout against Santa Clara (15-11, 5-6). The Broncos took the 4-2 contest thanks to nine hits and five extra-base hits.
Junior
Chaz Myers led the Tigers with two hits and one run scored. Freshman
Rylan Evans and junior
Jacob Weiss added hits, and Weiss drove in both Tiger runs. Junior
Chase Graves picked up two walks. The Tigers only struck out three times in the game.
Senior
Grant Stevens started the game and pitched 6.2 innings striking out three and allowing three runs. Senior
Tyler Stout pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit.
Santa Clara started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single to left field. The Broncos had the bases loaded in the inning, but an excellent defensive play from Stevens ended the threat.
All the Pacific scoring came in the fifth inning and came in one swing of the bat from Weiss, who blasted his third home run of the season over the left field wall, bringing home Myers in the process.
The Broncos would retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three straight doubles to start the inning. Once again, Stevens worked out of the jam, getting three straight outs and keeping it a one-run game.
The Broncos added an insurance run in the eighth inning with a double and throwing error from the Tigers bringing home the fourth run of the game.
The two teams will decide a series winner tomorrow in the rubber game. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
