Career Day from Otis Spoiled by Zags

SPOKANE, Wash. - Three runs in the eighth tied the game for Pacific (13-28, 5-16), but Gonzaga (17-24, 13-8) walked the game off on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-7.

Five separate Tigers got two hits. Freshman Tony Otis drove in three runs and hit his first career home run. Junior Jacob Weiss had two hits, scored two runs and had two walks.

Senior Marvcus Guarin started the game and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing five runs and striking out two. Sophomore Owen McWilliam pitched 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit.

Pacific took an early lead, as a single from junior Chaz Myers brought in Weiss in the top of the first inning. Gonzaga tied the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout.

Otis gave the Tigers the lead again in the third, as his two-run double gave Pacific a 3-1 lead. Gonzaga took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs on three hits and two walks.

Graduate Jeremy Lea brought in another run for Pacific in the top of the fourth and made it a one-run game. The Zags added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead.

Otis homered to lead off the top of the eighth; after two straight outs, Graduate Ben Nemivant and Lea reached. Weiss singled to right field to bring in one, and freshman Jake Tandy singled to right to bring home the third run of the inning.

With two runners in scoring position and one out, a wild pitch brought in the game-winning run for the Zags in the bottom of the ninth.

Pacific is back home this week, hosting UC Davis for a single game on Tuesday night.
