CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Pacific men's golf team ended the first day of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in third place after a registering a season-best 14-under par first round 274, finishing the first two rounds at five under par 571 (274-297).
"We got off to a good start as the morning was calm," Head Coach John Cook said. "We did a good job of sticking to our game plan and taking advantage of the par-5s."
All four of the counting scores in the first round were even or under par.
Griffin Long led the way with a career-low 6-under-par 66. Right behind him with a 5-under-par 67 was
Petr Janik, followed by a 3-under-par 69 from
Maverick Pavletich.
Alex Barclay wrapped up the morning with an even-par 72.
The Tigers recorded a total of 25 birdies in the first round, pacing the field and placing the team in second place, two shots behind Kansas.
Pacific followed up a stellar first round with a solid second round in windy conditions, keeping them in contention heading into the final round.
"We got off to a tougher start on more difficult holes," Cook continued. "We'll just keep trying to keep the momentum going and not make any big numbers."
Long and Janik lead the way for the Tigers, both in a tie for third after 36 holes. Pavletich sits in a tie for 21st, followed by
Leonardo Rigamonti in a tie for 87th, and Barclay in a tie for 90th.
Pacific tees off the final round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4th.
