STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific baseball (11-24, 4-12) opened its series against Pepperdine (14-21, 6-10) with a dominating 8-2 win behind a complete game from senior
Grant Stevens.
It was the second complete game of the year for Stevens, the WCC leader in complete games. Stevens struck out four while walking just one and allowed two runs in nine innings pitched. Stevens finished the game at just 103 pitches, averaging just over 10 an inning.
Junior
Chase Graves led the team in hits with two and added two walks. Graduate
Jeremy Lea drove in three runs on one hit. Graduate
Ben Nemivant drove in two runs on one hit. As a team, the Tigers stole a season-high six bases.
Pepperdine scored first, and a single to right field put the Waves up 1-0 in the second inning. Pacific responded in the bottom of the inning, as freshman
Jack Metcho worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run, and a Nemivant sacrifice fly scored the second run.
It was all Pacific in the middle innings. The Tigers scored once in the third as aggressive baserunning from Lea led to a throwing error and allowed Lea to trot home and add an insurance run.
Nemivant singled in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in freshman
Kaden Petersen and Graves to the plate. Graves walked to load the bases, and Lea brought everyone home, crushing a double to left center to clear the bases and blow the game wide open.
A 7-1 lead is exactly what Stevens ordered. The lefty worked around four hits scattered between the third and eighth innings, throwing nothing but zeroes up on the board for the Waves.
A wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth brought another run for the Tigers, bringing the score to 8-1. Pepperdine added one in the top of the ninth, but Stevens struck out the final batter to finish the game and secure the win.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow. The first pitch will be at 3:00 p.m.
