Tigers Tame Bulldogs in Late Night Thriller

STOCKTON, Calif. – In a wild back-and-forth game, Pacific baseball (6-8) took down Yale (4-6) in a late-night matchup, 11-10.

"Tonight's game was a wild one," said Head Coach Chris Rodriguez. "Wins are always difficult to come by. We must keep playing 27 outs, and I thought we played 24 outs fairly well. Caden Duke did an outstanding job tonight. I thought he handled himself well in a tough situation."

"I am glad the offense had a great night tonight, putting up 11 runs, which we needed all of them," continued Rodriguez. "Big performances from Myers, Nemivant, Graves and Otis helped spark the team tonight."

Power-hitting drove the Tigers' win, with graduate Jeremy Lea, juniors Chase Graves and Chaz Myers all hitting home runs. Myers scored three runs. Graduate Ben Nemivant led the team with three hits and two RBI. Myers added a triple, while Nemivant and freshmen Tony Otis and Peyton Miller all hit doubles. Otis added two hits and scored twice.

Nine different Tigers toed the rubber tonight; senior Grant Stevens got the start and pitched 4.0 innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. Sophomore Owen McWilliam picked up the win after pitching 1.0 inning with two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Caden Duke collected his third save of the season while pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

"I was happy to be able to play tonight. We discuss it all the time how well Klein Family Field can handle the rain," Rodriguez remarked after canceling Sunday's contest against CSUN. "Tonight showed that again. So we tell our guys to be ready to play in all conditions. I cannot remember a time when we had so many tarp pulls this early in the season, but we got to play baseball!"

The scoring came in bursts early in the game and waves as the night progressed. Pacific put two runs on the board in the first inning with an RBI groundout from freshman Rylan Evans and a solo home run from Lea. Yale answered in the top of the third with its own solo homerun to make it a one-run game.

The Tigers stole a run in the bottom of the fourth, with Graves stealing second base and Myers sprinting home on the ensuing throw. Yale tied the game in the top of the sixth, scoring once on a throwing error from Pacific and once on a bases-loaded walk.

Pacific responded quickly, as the Tigers got solo home runs from Myers and Graves to start the inning and after an Otis hustle double, he scored on a single from Nemivant. The Bulldogs added a run on a passed ball in the top of the seventh to keep the game close in the final third.

It looked like Pacific put the game away in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring five runs on two hits. After three straight hit-by-pitches, junior Telly Hill brought home the first run on a groundout. Singles from Otis and Nemivant scored two more before three wild pitches brought in two more runs for the Tigers.

Yale added one run in the eighth before making things interesting late. A Pacific throwing error on what could have been a double play ball scored the first run. Back-to-back singles scored two more runs, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Duke entered the game and shut down the Bulldog rally, striking out the final batter.

Pacific opens up WCC play this weekend as the team travels down to play San Diego in a three-game series.
